Whistler, British Columbia March 31, 2026 – Alpine Solutions has been granted official approval from Transport Canada to operate MONTIS, the drone-based avalanche control system designed and manufactured by Drone Amplified. The two companies recently achieved a major milestone in avalanche safety by completing the first known drone-initiated explosive avalanche control operations at a Canadian ski resort — at Whistler Blackcomb, a Vail Resorts destination and the largest ski resort in North America.
The operations were carried out by Alpine Solutions, a Transport Canada-approved operator authorized to deploy the MONTIS system in Canadian airspace. The missions were executed earlier this month in complex alpine terrain, demonstrating the system's capability to safely trigger controlled avalanches and protect vital ski resort terrain from overhead hazards.
Drone Amplified’s MONTIS system transforms avalanche mitigation by allowing operators to fly a drone over high-risk zones and precisely deploy explosive charges from a safe distance. Designed to work alongside existing methods like Remote Avalanche Control Systems (RACs) and other traditional techniques, MONTIS provides a highly capable, complementary tool that reduces physical risk to mitigation crews while adding new flexibility and precision to avalanche control operations.
"MONTIS is a great tool that will provide new and expanded options in avalanche management."
- Tim Haggerty, Avalanche Forecaster at Whistler Blackcomb.
This expansion into the Canadian market builds upon Drone Amplified's ongoing collaborations with the Alaska Department of Transportation and explosive industry leaders Austin Powder and CIL Avalanche — brought to life in Canada through Alpine Solutions, whose operational expertise and regulatory authorization made these first missions possible. Together, these partnerships ensure that MONTIS meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and capability for North American avalanche professionals.
Like all avalanche control methods, MONTIS has its place — offering real advantages in certain terrain and operational scenarios where other tools fall short. Its arrival in Canada gives mitigation teams one more option to draw from, making programs more adaptable across a wider range of conditions.
