LINCOLN, NE - July 8, 2026 - Drone Amplified, the industry leader in uncrewed aerial ignition and payload systems, announced today that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted regulatory approval for the operation of its MONTIS drone-based avalanche control system. This landmark decision provides a clear, legal framework for Drone Amplified and its U.S. customers to safely conduct drone-based avalanche control operations, marking a major leap forward for mountain safety and winter infrastructure management.
Avalanche mitigation relies on a comprehensive toolkit, including manned helicopters, fixed explosive towers, artillery, and skilled ground personnel. With this new FAA approval, transportation departments, ski resorts, and private entities now have a legal path to integrate the MONTIS drone system alongside these existing methods, providing teams with a versatile new option to remotely trigger controlled avalanches from a safe distance.
A New Era of Operational Safety
The FAA’s regulatory pathway for MONTIS officially recognizes the safety and reliability of Drone Amplified’s integrated hardware and software ecosystem. By incorporating highly precise uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) to complement traditional methods, organizations can fundamentally shift their risk management profile.
Key advantages of the MONTIS drone system include:
- Reduced Crew Exposure: Removes personnel from hazardous avalanche paths enabling teams to conduct critical mitigation from a secure, remote location.
- Operational Flexibility and Scalability: MONTIS works alongside existing solutions to fill the operational gap between ground crews and helicopters, serving as a primary tool, a backup, or a strategic supplement.
- Integrated Reliability: Built by the engineering team behind the battle-tested IGNIS firefighting drone, MONTIS offers a cohesive, fully redundant platform.
- Trusted Industry Collaboration: Developed in partnership with explosive industry leaders Austin Powder and CIL Avalanche, the system integrates field-proven ignition and explosive technology trusted by safety professionals for decades.
Advancing the Mission
“Our mission is simple: use robotics to make the most dangerous jobs safer,” said Carrick Detweiler, CEO of Drone Amplified. “Avalanche mitigation crews protect communities and keep critical infrastructure open every single day. This landmark FAA approval is a testament to the rigorous engineering behind MONTIS and our close collaboration with partners like the Alaska Department of Transportation.”
