Anchorage, Alaska – March 10th, 2026 – Drone Amplified has deployed a new electronic ignition system for its MONTIS avalanche control drone in Alaska.
Avalanche mitigation teams are operating the system in extreme mountain conditions. The upgrade enables electronic detonator ignition, precision timing, and airblast capability, raising the standard for remote avalanche control.
Recent avalanche events in North America have renewed public attention on avalanche risk and mitigation operations. Avalanche professionals trigger controlled slides to reduce the risk of catastrophic avalanches that threaten ski resorts, backcountry terrain, and mountain highways. For decades, this work relied on WWII-era artillery, fixed gas exploders, or hand charges placed by crews traveling through dangerous terrain.
MONTIS modernizes that process with American made drone-systems and payloads. The system allows ski patrols and transportation agencies to fly a drone over high-risk zones and deploy explosives from a safe distance. Crews stay out of the avalanche path while maintaining precise control over placement and timing.
The new electronic ignition system takes that safety further. It supports airblasts, which often trigger more effective results than surface charges. Drone Amplified built the system to operate in extreme cold, high winds, and low visibility, conditions common in alpine environments.
“Our mission is simple: use robotics to make the most dangerous jobs safer. Avalanche mitigation crews protect communities every day. MONTIS helps them do that work more effectively. We are happy to have developed this over the past four years in conjunction with the avalanche experts at CIL and the state of Alaska Department of Transportation.”
- Carrick Detweiler, CEO of Drone Amplified
Drone Amplified is working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to expand operational access. This ongoing collaboration is focused on bringing the MONTIS system to other state transportation agencies and private entities nationwide.
By giving mitigation teams safer and more capable tools, agencies can conduct avalanche control more consistently and with greater flexibility. That protects the professionals doing the work—and the skiers, backcountry travelers, and motorists who rely on safe mountain terrain.
